Biology

These works were all completed in upper level biology courses focused on genetics at the University of Denver.

Molecular Mechanisms of Neurodegenerative Diseases

This course explained how neurodegenerative diseases occur in the body and possible medical treatments. We discussed SMA, fragile X syndrome, myotonic dystrophy, ALS, Alzheimer's, spinocerebellar ataxia, and prion disease. This course consisted of many literature reviews of recent findings from disease research. I chose to include my review of a paper on myotonic dystrophy.

Stem Cells and Tissue Regeneration

This course focused on how stem cells function in the body and the underlying genetic factors that influence cell growth, cell repair, and cell death. Topics included cellular plasticity, homeostasis, pluripotency, dedifferentiation, and regenerative medicine. This course consisted of many literature reviews of landmark studies in the field. I chose to include my summary of two important papers on skin stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells.
